ANN ARBOR ? ForeSee released its February Contact Center Benchmark, which allows companies to determine how the contact center experience they provide compares to industry averages and customer expectations.
Nearly 11,000 customers expressed their opinions about contact centers to ForeSee in the month of February. ForeSee?s satisfaction benchmark for contact centers is at 70 on the company?s 100-point scale. This is an average score that contact centers can use as a yardstick against which to measure their own performance. Companies scoring significantly higher than 70 are outperforming the industry average. Companies scoring significantly below 70 have a lot of work to do, because their customers? satisfaction has a direct impact on future actions, such as the likelihood to purchase from the company in the future.
Scores for individual companies included in the benchmark range from a low of 53 to a high of 86 ? a fairly large range that has implications for the future of their customer relationships. Some companies are well-loved for the contact center experiences they provide, while others are strongly disliked. One clue to the disparity in satisfaction comes in the primary objective of the call center. When ForeSee isolated scores for service-focused call centers only, there was a benchmark of 67. This comes as no surprise since customers contacting a service-oriented center are likely calling with a problem and may already be frustrated.
ForeSee?s predictive methodology has been used by leading companies in many industries for more than 10 years to measure customer satisfaction with web experiences. World News - Report: Syria accepts Kofi Annan's plan to end violence

Updated at 8:20 a.m. ET: Syria accepted a ceasefire and peace plan drawn up by Kofi Annan, the U.N. and Arab League special envoy said on Tuesday, even as Syrian troops thrust into Lebanon to battle rebels who had taken refuge there.
On a two-day visit to Beijing, Annan told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he faced a long and difficult task in his mission to end fighting in Syria, but global cooperation with China and other countries was the only way to do it.
"I indicated that I had received a response from the Syrian government and will be making it public today, which is positive, and we hope to work with them to translate it into action," Annan told reporters in Beijing after meeting Wen.
"I have a six-point plan which the Security Council has endorsed, dealing with issues of political discussions, withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance being allowed in unimpeded, release of prisoners, freedom of movement and access to journalists to go in and out," he said. "So we will need to see how we move ahead and implement this agreement that they have accepted."

The Syrian opposition, meanwhile, welcomed the government's acceptance of a U.N. peace plan, a member of the Syrian National Council said.

Meanwhile, Syrian troops advanced into north Lebanon on Tuesday, destroying farm buildings and clashing with Syrian rebels who had taken refuge there, residents told Reuters.
"More than 35 Syrian soldiers came across the border and started to destroy houses," said Abu Ahmed, 63, a resident of the rural mountain area of al-Qaa.
Amateur videos from Syria were released online on Monday, purportedly showing shelling by government forces in the city of Homs. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.
Another resident told Reuters that the soldiers, some traveling in armored personnel vehicles, fired rocket-propelled grenades and exchanged heavy machine-gun fire with rebels.
Regional English-language news channel Al-Jazeera has previously reported an escalation in tensions along the border. It said residents claimed the Syrian military planted landmines close to inhabited areas while, in early October, a Syrian army tank reportedly fired shells at Lebanese military targets inside Lebanon's borders.

Russia and China have shielded Assad from U.N. Security Council condemnation by vetoing two Western-backed resolutions over the bloodshed, but approved a Security Council statement this week endorsing Annan's mission.

"I would like the decision on the fate of the Syrian state, society, political system and people to be taken not by the respected leaders of world powers, even by those acting in good faith, but by the Syrian people themselves, by all the levels of the Syrian society," Medvedev said at the end of a nuclear security summit in Seoul.

This post continues my Friday series examining some of the imbalances of power in our society and the ethical questions they raise. Yesterday, I was troubled to read an Associated Press story about the latest technique that employers are using to vet job applicants. It?s common for managers to peruse applicants? public online postings, but many people restrict access to their social media profiles to friends and family. To make sure that they?ve gathered every possible last scintilla of potenially damaging information when those people apply for jobs, many companies and government agencies are now demanding candidates? log-in information so they can poke around on their private Facebook pages. Others insist that candidates log into their accounts on a company computer. Interviewers then ask the candidates to sign agreements banning them from talking negatively about the company after leaving the interview. Some candidates refuse and withdraw their job applications. Sadly, others - especially those who lost their jobs when the recession hit - have little choice but to agree. The ACLU has condemned the practice as an invasion of privacy, and Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut is already preparing a bill to ban it. (Good for you, Senator!) Regardless of legality, though, I have to ask: is this really the way we want to interact with one another?
The balance of power between employers and prospective employees has always tended to tip in the employer?s favor. That doesn?t mean, though, that employers should use that power to bully their way into candidates? intentionally private spaces. Nobody has to set up a social media profile, I suppose, but it?s certainly a wonderful way to stay in touch with loved ones. Shouldn?t people be able to do that without having to worry that every ill-considered word or unflattering picture that?s posted may be used against them every time they look for work?
And what do companies expect to find on those private profiles, anyway? They might dig up something genuinely valuable once in a very great while, but the vast majority of what they?ll see is likely to be boring and irrelevant, and the rest embarrassing but ultimately innocent. People have odd hobbies and interests, and they do silly things in front of the camera sometimes. That doesn?t mean they wouldn?t make great employees. Quite the contrary - I tend to think that anyone who?s never taken an embarrassing picture or said something they regretted would probably be an unimaginative dolt or a hyper-defensive sociopath. Would you really want to hire either one? And why would any employer want to start a relationship with a new employee by playing Big Brother? How much respect and loyalty could such an employer possibly inspire?
The economy is recovering, albeit slowly, giving employers a new opportunity to treat their employees, current and prospective, with kindness and respect. Instead of violating employees? privacy, wouldn?t it be better for employers to ask good questions in interviews, listen carefully to the answers, then make hiring decisions based on what?s publicly available to them? That might not flush out every possible problem employee, but digging around on Facebook won?t, either. Reasonable respect for employee privacy will, I think, yield better relationships and, ultimately, better business results.

Not just for the birds: Man-made noise has ripple effects on plants, too

A growing body of research shows that birds and other animals change their behavior in response to manmade noise, such as the din of traffic or the hum of machinery. But human clamor doesn't just affect animals. Because many animals also pollinate plants or eat or disperse their seeds, human noise can have ripple effects on plants too, finds a new study.
In cases where noise has ripple effects on long-lived plants like trees, the consequences could last for decades, even after the source of the noise goes away, says lead author Clinton Francis of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.
The study appears in the March 21 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
In previous studies, Francis and colleagues found that some animals increase in numbers near noisy sites, while others decline. But could animals' different responses to manmade noise have indirect effects on plants, too?
Because they can't move, many plants rely on birds and other animals to deliver pollen from one flower to the next, or to disperse their seeds.
To find out what animal responses to noise might mean for plants, the researchers conducted a series of experiments from 2007 to 2010 in the Bureau of Land Management's Rattlesnake Canyon Wildlife Area in northwestern New Mexico.
The region is home to thousands of natural gas wells, many of which are coupled with noisy compressors for extracting the gas and transporting it through pipelines. The compressors roar and rumble day and night, every day of the year.
The advantage of working in natural gas sites is they allow scientists to study noise and its effects on wildlife without many of the confounding factors often associated with noisy areas like roadways or cities, such as pollution from artificial light and chemicals or collisions with cars.
To find out what animal responses to manmade noise might mean for plants, first the researchers did an experiment using patches of artificial plants designed to mimic a common red wildflower in the area called scarlet gilia.
Each patch consisted of five artificial plants with three "flowers" each ? microcentrifuge tubes wrapped in red electrical tape ? which were filled with a fixed amount of sugar water for nectar. To help in estimating pollen transfer within and between the patches, the researchers also dusted the flowers of one plant per patch with artificial pollen, using a different color for each patch.
Din levels at noisy patches were similar to a highway heard from 500 meters away, Francis explained. When the researchers compared the number of pollinator visits at noisy and quiet sites, they found that one bird species in particular ? the black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) ? made five times more visits to noisy sites than quiet ones.
"Black-chinned hummingbirds may prefer noisy sites because another bird species that preys on their nestlings, the western scrub jay, tends to avoid those areas," Francis said.
Pollen transfer was also more common in the noisy sites. If more hummingbird visits and greater pollen transfer translate to higher seed production for the plants, the results suggest that "hummingbird-pollinated plants such as scarlet gilia may indirectly benefit from noise," Francis explained.
Another set of experiments revealed that noise may indirectly benefit some plants, but is bad news for others.
In a second series of experiments at the same study site, the researchers set out to find out what noise might mean for tree seeds and seedlings, using one of the dominant trees in the area ? the pi?on pine (Pinus edulis).
Pi?on pine seeds that aren't plucked from their cones fall to the ground and are eaten by birds and other animals. To find out if noise affected the number of pi?on pine seeds that animals ate, the researchers scattered pi?on pine seeds underneath 120 pi?on pine trees in noisy and quiet sites, using a motion-triggered camera to figure out what animals took the seeds.
After three days, a number of animals were spotted feeding on the seeds, including mice, chipmunks, squirrels, birds and rabbits. But two animals in particular differed between quiet and noisy sites ?mice, which preferred noisy sites, and western scrub jays, which avoided them altogether.
Pi?on pine seeds that are eaten by mice don't survive the passage through the animal's gut, Francis explained, so the boost in mouse populations near noisy sites could be bad news for pine seedlings in those areas.
In contrast, a single western scrub jay may take hundreds to thousands of seeds, only to hide them in the soil to eat later in the year. The seeds they fail to relocate will eventually germinate, so the preference of western scrub jays for quiet areas means that pi?on pines in those areas are likely to benefit.
In keeping with their seed results, the researchers counted the number of pi?on pine seedlings and found that they were four times as abundant in quiet sites compared with noisy ones.
It may take decades for a pi?on pine to grow from a seedling into a full-grown tree, Francis said. This means the consequences of noise may last longer than we thought. "Fewer seedlings in noisy areas might eventually mean fewer mature trees, but because pi?on pines are so slow-growing the shift could have gone undetected for years, he explained.
"Fewer pi?on pine trees would mean less critical habitat for the hundreds of species that depend on them for survival," he added.

Two years ago Aaron and Debbie Knobloch learned that their?baby daughter Alida was suffering from a rare lung disease and that she would need a portable oxygen tank to help her breathe. The good news was that the oxygen tank would make their little girl healthy. The bad news was that she?d have to be tethered to the 6-pound tank most of the time.
The Knoblochs struggled to find a way to give Alida a normal life. Aaron built a walker with a pocket for the oxygen tank so she wouldn?t always have to be tied to one of her parents. But as the little girl grew older ? and more mobile ? the walker wasn?t enough.
When Aaron saw a TV program?about service dogs, he knew he had the answer:?with a dog carrying her oxygen tank, little Alida would be free to roam and play with other kids. Enter Mr. Gibbs, a golden doodle trained to be Alida?s constant companion, ever at her side whether it?s?scampering down the slide at the playground or trotting alongside as she rides her bike.
"He's been a great addition to the family and just awesome help for her," Aaron told TODAY's Matt Lauer. Next to him, 3-year-old Alida giggled as she?alternated between wrestling and cuddling Mr. Gibbs, who patiently rested his head on her lap.?
It hasn?t been an easy journey for the Knoblochs.
Though she was a little premature, Alida initially seemed healthy. But by the time she was 6 months old, the little girl started having breathing problems. Sometimes her heart would start racing for no apparent reason. Other times she seemed to be breathing too fast. Then one day she turned blue and the Knoblochs rushed her to the hospital. Though she was quickly stabilized, doctors?couldn't explain what was happening to Alida.

Aaron and Debbie went from doctor to doctor searching for answers. The relief was palpable when they finally found a specialist who figured out what was wrong:? 8-month-old Alida was suffering from a rare lung condition called neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy, or NEHI, that made it hard for her body to get enough oxygen from the air she breathed.
The condition was discovered just seven years ago, and?there have only been 500 confirmed cases, according to the Children?s Interstitial and Diffuse Lung Disease Foundation (chILD).
So far, nobody has figured out exactly what causes the children?s labored breathing, says NEHI specialist Dr. Megan Dishop, a pediatric pathologist at the Children?s Hospital Colorado and an associate professor of pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Researchers just know that there is an overabundance of neuroendocrine cells in children with NEHI. The dog?was living with Ashleigh Kinsleigh, who trains service dogs. The puppy had finished up his initial obedience training when the Knoblochs came for their first visit.

Mr. Gibbs is learning to keep up with Alida everywhere she goes, including up and down the slide on the playground.
Alida hit it off with the shaggy puppy right away.
?They weren?t sure they wanted to go with a golden doodle,? Kinsleigh told TODAY.com. ?But she went crazy for him.?
So Kinsleigh began the specialized training a dog would need to take care of an especially young charge.
?He had to learn to get under the table at restaurants,? she says. ?He had to learn that if there were other animals he couldn?t just go and play with them. He had to stay right next to his girl and ignore all the fun things around him. He also had to build up to be able to carry around the full weight of the 6 pound tank.?
Kinsleigh calls Gibbs ?a work in progress? because he?s still learning to be a little girl?s constant companion. ?His job is to go wherever she goes and do whatever she does,? Kinsleigh explains. ?If she wants to get on the bike and go down the driveway he has to learn to run alongside. If she?s going to ride on a slide, he has to learn to climb up and slide down behind her.?
Gibbs may not always have to carry around Alida?s oxygen tank.
Experts say that children seem to ?grow out of? NEHI ? or at least the need to breath with the help of an oxygen tank. ?The general thinking is that these children will only have mild residual disease long term,? Dishop says.
Maybe one day Gibbs' only job description will be:?girl?s best friend.
