Spider-Man 'Belongs To Everybody,' Andrew Garfield Says

'I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror,' the 'Amazing Spider-Man' star tells MTV News.

With the release of the new trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," fans got their first extended look at Andrew Garfield's take on the wall crawler before the movie hits theaters in July. He's darker and a bit more sarcastic, but with a series reboot coming so soon after the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, comparisons between the two are bound to dominate much of the conversation.

Garfield doesn't necessarily see the need for comparison and told MTV News' Josh Horowitz that he would have a hard time describing any differences.

"I can't answer that, really. I don't know. I know that I saw the Sam Raimi/ Tobey Maguire version before it was legally out. I was so excited to see it, I got a pirate copy," Garfield told MTV News before a screening event Monday. "I was blown away. [Tobey has] been Spider-Man in my imagination since then, in my mind's eye."

The star explained how "The Amazing Spider-Man" was made with the series' history in mind and how that added to the story.

"Thinking about those movies outside of just knowing the history that was supporting our movie, we are just another chapter in the legacy," he said. "I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror and attempt to do it justice."

Garfield has never kept his own fandom a secret, having even appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in store-bought Spidey regalia. That passion played a big part in how he thinks about the role.

"I do feel like he's in me, like all true fans do," he said. "That's what being a fan is of a character like this: feeling like there's no separation between you and them and that you have ownership over them. Ultimately, you have no ownership over it, because he belongs to everybody."

When it comes down to it, the actor in the suit doesn't actually matter, according to Garfield. "The symbol is bigger than any actor playing him and any particular movie or comic book," he said. "The symbol of the mask, the symbol of the suit, it doesn't even matter who's in it, as long as somebody's in it to keep the symbol alive. That's what's important to me."

But as Uncle Ben said, "With great power, comes great responsibility." Though it may not matter to Spider-Man fans who is in the suit, getting up every morning to play the man is a different story.

"In terms of how I approached it, I just approached it every day I woke up. My first thought was 'Oh, boy,' " Garfield said. "Then my second thought was, 'Remember, just go from a place of being a fan and caring as deeply as you do.' You have to just let go and trust from there on. If people like it, people like it."

ArcelorMittal posts $1 billion loss in Q4

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Steel maker ArcelorMittal was cautiously optimistic about its near-term prospects even after it reported a heavy fourth quarter loss generated by a deteriorating European economy and big tax and restructuring charges.

The Luxembourg-based company said Tuesday that it posted a $1 billion net loss in the three months to end-December, compared to a $780 million loss a year earlier, even though sales spiked 8.5 percent at $22.45 billion.

The loss was mostly due to $1.3 billion in charges for deferred taxes, restructuring and impairments, though mounting worries over Europe's economy in the wake of a crippling debt crisis hit demand levels too.

"The progressive recovery that we have been experiencing was impacted in the second half of the year by the growing uncertainty over the economic situation in Europe, which particularly affected sentiment and performance in the fourth quarter," Chief Executive Lakshmi N. Mittal said in the earnings statement.

However, the company said economic sentiment had improved in the first weeks of the new year, particularly in the U.S., and was optimistic about sales and earnings in the first half.

That helped the company's share price open around 1.7 percent higher at euro16.45.

ArcelorMittal is particularly vulnerable to changes in economic sentiment, since much of the steel it makes is used in expensive items like cars, home appliances or buildings.

Concerns over how the debt crisis in the eurozone would affect the overall economy contributed to steel prices dropping 6.2 percent compared to the third quarter, while shipments fell 2.5 percent as buyers in Europe used up existing stock, the company said.

"Looking ahead to 2012, the situation in Europe remains a live concern," Lakshmi N. Mittal said.

However, Chief Financial Officer Aditya Mittal said the company had seen sales and prices improve in the early weeks of this year compared with the end of 2011.

"Sentiment in Europe, which was crisis in Q4, is now a recessionary environment," Aditya Mittal told reporters in a conference call.

ArcelorMittal expects results in the first half of this year to be better than the second half of 2011, but behind those of a year ago.

The company is benefiting from its presence around the world, which helps buffer the worsening situation in the eurozone, where steep spending cuts in some countries and concerns over the future of the euro have depressed growth.

For the full year of 2012, ArcelorMittal sees steel demand increase 4.6 percent worldwide, despite a 1.3 percent drop in Europe.

Aditya Mittal said the beginning of this year had brought improvements in demand in the U.S., where unemployment has fallen in recent months. Car production was particularly strong, while construction was still limping behind, he added.

In China, tighter monetary policy had depressed demand almost 10 percent from the summer, the CFO said, but 2012 demand is still expected to see a 5.2 percent rise.

Alexander Haissl, an analyst at CA Cheuvreux, said ArcelorMittal's earnings were "bang in line with expectations."

"The situation is not as nasty as many in the market had feared," Haissl said, adding that sales should be particularly strong in the second quarter, as buys replenish their steel stocks.

The company also increased production of both iron ore and coal ? two key ingredients for steel ? by 10 percent and 20 percent respectively. It has been building up its own iron ore and coal production to become more independent from price changes in those two products.

ArcelorMittal is the world largest steel maker by sales, responsible for about 6 percent of global steel output.

Cubans say U.S. embargo a failure at 50 (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? The 50th anniversary of the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba on Tuesday was met with little fanfare on the island, where Cubans said it was a failed policy that had succeeded only in making their lives more difficult.

They said if the embargo was lifted, they likely would live a little better, but some said it also would increase pressure on the Cuban government to fix problems that for years it has blamed on U.S. sanctions.

On February 7, 1962 what had been a partial embargo became a nearly total one as President John F. Kennedy tried to step up pressure on Cuba's fiery young leader Fidel Castro, who at the height of the Cold War had aligned his country with the Soviet Union.

The Kennedy administration hoped the trade ban would disrupt the Cuban economy and undermine the Castro government.

Half a century and nine U.S. presidents later, Fidel Castro, though mostly retired, is still around, his brother Raul Castro is leading the country and the communist system they created remains in place.

But the embargo is still the cornerstone of U.S. policy toward the Caribbean island 90 miles from Florida.

The "blockade," as its known in Cuba, failed to achieve its primary objective, but has made things more difficult and more expensive for the average Cuban, said retiree Juan Jorge Castillo, 67.

"We know that that the (country) that embargoes us is a power and that the power could sell us (products) more cheaply," he said. "We have to go to other places and acquire them more expensively. The objective is to destroy us, to drown us."

Roberto Esteban, a self-employed vendor of Cuban handicrafts, agreed, saying Cuba's chronic economic woes are attributable to the U.S. sanctions.

"It does a lot of damage to us. There are many people here who think that's not the case, that it's the country, an internal problem," he said at his stand in central Havana.

DOING HARM

"I don't think it's an internal problem. The blockade exists and it's doing harm," he said.

Communist Party newspaper Granma had nothing about the anniversary on Tuesday, but Cuban television news repeated the government's contention that the embargo has cost the island $975 billion over the years, a figure that many experts consider inflated.

The embargo allows U.S. sales of agricultural goods and medicine to Cuba and U.S. President Barack Obama has loosened travel restrictions to the island.

Many Cubans say the persistence of the embargo cannot be blamed solely on the U.S. government.

They believe vested interests in the Cuban exile community in the United States want it to continue for their own economic and political interest, and they say their own government finds it a convenient scapegoat.

"It's like it's a shield for the bad things they've done here," said vegetable salesman Rafael Garcia. "It influences in part what happens, but it does not determine everything."

"I don't think the embargo is killing us or doing as much as the government says," said Rachel, a teacher who did not want to give her full name.

"If they did away with the embargo, our government would have no one to blame for the way things are and we would have the possibility to say to the government 'now what are you going to do? How are you going to fix it?" she said.

Dissident economist Oscar Espinoza Chepe said the embargo had only served "to give the Cuban government an alibi to declare Cuba a fortress under siege, to justify repression and to (pass) the blame for the economic disaster in Cuba."

Embargo supporters in the United States say the sanctions still serve the purpose of pressuring Cuba to change.

"In addition to imposing economic pressure on the Castro regime and holding it accountable for actions against U.S. interests, the embargo is a moral stance against a brutal dictatorship," U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The embargo will remain in place until free, fair and transparent elections are scheduled, political prisoners are released and freedom of expression and the press are established," said Ros-Lehtinen, who is chairwoman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

But Geoff Thale, director of the Washington Office on Latin America think tank, said in a statement it was time to move on from the embargo.

He cited economic reforms now underway in Cuba to liberalize the island's Soviet-style economy and said the sanctions were "excluding the United States from the real process of change that is happening" there.

"Sensible politicians ought to be pushing for greater engagement and dialogue between Cuba and the United States. Cuba is changing and we shouldn't spend the next 50 years standing on the sidelines," Thale said.
